Former state lawmaker to address need
for Maine prison reform at Colby event
WATERVILLE -- Stan Moody of Manchester, a former state representative and Maine State Prison chaplain, will be the guest lecturer Nov. 17 at the Oak Institute for the Study of International Human Rights at Colby College.
Moody, a recent recipient of the Maine Civil Liberties Union 2010 Baldwin Award for outstanding efforts to defend civil liberties in Maine, will present his lecture titled, “Criminal Justice: America’s Hall of Shame.”
The human rights conference begins at 7 p.m. at Lovejoy Hall 215 and is free and open to the public.
From his experiences as a recent chaplain at MSP, Moody has written and published more than 60 articles on prison reform for both state and national journals and websites.
He was recently named to the advisory board of Solitary Watch and JewsOnFirst.org, both based in Washington, D.C.
Moody is presently pastor of the Meeting House Church in Manchester. He is considered an authority on international human rights violations in the West Bank of Palestine and has been guest speaker at a number of national conferences.
The Oak Institute focuses primarily on issues related to foreign human rights violations. As prison reform begins to surface as a national priority, however, the institute is looking to study violations at home and to build support for transparency and accountability in the U.S. corrections system.
“The public is just now beginning to become aware of abuses within our prisons, the third-highest budget item in our state,” Moody said. “To have captured the interest of the Oak Institute is an encouragement to those of us who have been working in the trenches for meaningful prison reform in Maine and across the nation, as well as internationally.”
Moody’s articles on prison reform can be read at www.scribd.com/stanmoody.
